Pre-flood tips to help prevent damage from moderate flooding
Take action and be prepared for a flood - putting some thought and preparation in beforehand will save you much time, money and hassle.
That said, if the flood is severe only a good insurance policy and a positive attitude can help.
Do
Make sure you have a valid insurance policy in place.
Get a flood protection system and plan in place. Councils are not obliged to provide householders with any means of flood protection - some Councils may help, please check with your local Council.
Monitor all media for flood warnings. Share the information with your neighbours, particularly elderly people or people less able, so that they can also prepare themselves. Please see:

Use Floodbloxs self-inflating sandbags to block or deflect floodwater from doorways or where water can penetrate your home.
Place mop-it-up water absorbing sheets inside thresholds to capture any penetrating floodwater (up to 5Lt per sheet). Mopitup captures water and turns it into a non drip gel, making clearing up any water ingress much easier.
Have waterproof clothing and welly boots at hand.
Ensure furniture and household effects are kept on high areas or upstairs. Remove rugs, curtains and even internal doors. Valuable papers and other personal items should also be stored in waterproof containers. Wrap large items like sofas and tables (that cannot be removed) in one large plastic sheet and tie-up at the top.
Ensure that your pets and cars are in a safe location.
Ensure objects left outside your home are kept in a safe place like a shed or garage. Outdoor objects e.g. garden furniture can float away but will not move if stored and/or secured and will not be affected by floodwater.
Shut off your utilities
Be positive.
Do Not
Be complacent, this can lead to more hassle on the end.
Expect that your council will provide you with flood protection. i.e. sandbags.
Expect sandbags stored for a period of time to be fit-for-purpose (many can easily rot).
Leave your house unattended if you’re expecting a downpour or flood situation if you are in an at risk area.
